The Wapta Traverse

This year we are skiing the original Wapta Traverse, from Peyto Glacier to Kicking Horse Pass. Traverse an icefield, climb a peak or two and get some fun ski descents in! Stay safe with an ACMG certified guide.

The crew on top of Mt Olive

We start with a ski across Peyto Lake and continue up valley to Peyto Glacier. This leads us onto the icefield and eventually the comfortable Whyte Hut. In addition to our safety gear, all we need to bring are a sleeping bag and our food.

We spend the second day in this area. We can either work on skills like crevasse rescue or ski up one of the nearby peaks.

Days 3 to 5 are spent traversing glaciers and icefields. Expect four to six hours travel time on each day. If we have the energy we may be able to go for a run once we get to the next hut, or perhaps we will ski up a peak along the way!

The Balfour Hut

The huts are small but comfortable. In addition to the Whyte Hut we stay at the Balfour and Scott Duncan Huts. We need to bring sleeping bags but the huts have all cooking and eating utensils, propane stoves, propane lighting and mattresses.

You have the ability to enjoy this classic Canadian ski traverse if:

- You are a strong skier (can ski a black diamond run at a ski hill)

- Have done some ski touring

- Have a regular fitness routine
